On Wednesday, February 18, Fox News posted a clip on its X account of the 34-year-old Mayor announcing his proposal to raise property tax rates in New York City by nearly 10 percent. The network captioned the video with, “TAX TUG-OF-WAR: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani issues a stark ultimatum to the Empire State: Give him the green light to tax ‘the ultra-wealthy’ and corporations, or he’ll slap working New Yorkers with a massive property tax hike.”
“Faced with no other choice, the city would have to exercise the only revenue lever fully within our own control. We would have to raise property taxes,” Mamdani said of the measure he is preparing, which he claimed was a “last resort” to be deployed if he cannot convince Gov. Kathy Hochul to raise income taxes on the wealthy.
In the comments section of Fox News’ post, viewers slammed the Mayor’s move, with one person writing, “This is the classic trap. Threaten to soak the wealthy and corporations, then pivot straight to jacking up property taxes on regular homeowners and renters who are already stretched thin.”
Another slammed, “Do you think threatening to massively hike property taxes on everyday homeowners is a fair way to force the state to let NYC tax the ultra-wealthy, or is this just punishing middle-class families for a budget problem the city created itself?”

A third fumed, “Mayor Mamdani’s tax ultimatum burdens either the wealthy or working families—neither sustains growth. Verify NYC’s budget for waste cuts first, then explore fair reforms that attract investment and jobs. Prioritize American prosperity over hikes!”
A fourth raged, “People who voted for him right now will be disappointed,” as a fourth penned, “So either way it’s lose/lose for the citizens, they get what they asked for.”
Yet another condemned the proposal by saying, “Don’t make working families pay the price.”
According to The New York Times, the suggested 9.5 percent tax increase would affect more than 3 million single-family homes, co-ops, and condos, and over 100,000 commercial buildings.
During his announcement of the potential tax hike on Tuesday, February 17, the mayor noted that his proposal would not just force the wealthy to pay more taxes, but would also be a “tax on working- and middle-class New Yorkers.”
While he stressed that this was not his first choice, he also noted that New York City mayors had little authority to raise taxes without the governor’s and the Legislature’s approval.

Mamdani said that a city property tax increase, along with going through the city’s reserve funds, was the only option to address the budget deficit projected to reach $5.4 billion over two years.
“If we cannot follow this first path,” he said, referring to his proposed income tax hike on rich New Yorkers, “we will be forced onto a much more damaging path of last resort — one where we have to use the only tools at the city’s disposal: raising property taxes and raiding our reserves.”
“The second path is painful,” he added. “We will continue to work with Albany to avoid it.”
If other options arrive, Mamdani may soften or abandon the proposed tax increase as the June 30 city budget deadline approaches.
Meanwhile, Hochul played down the likelihood of city property taxes rising on Tuesday.

“That’s their prerogative to look at that as an option,” she said while noting that cost-cutting and updated accounting might help axe the proposed increase in taxes.
“He’s required to put options on the table; that does not mean that’s the final resolution,” the governor added.
The budget plan is Mamdani’s first since becoming Mayor this year. It totals $127 billion — a $5 billion increase from the current budget.
If passed, it would take effect on July 1, following revisions and negotiations with the City Council.
