Margaret’s voice came softly from behind me. “Are you going to tell them?” she asked, meaning the town, the church, the Whitcombs, all the mouths that would shape this story into whatever suited them.

I stared at the finished seam, straight but not perfect, and felt the weight of my grandmother’s love pressing gently and insistently against my ribs—love that had protected me by hiding truth, love that now asked me to decide whether protection was still worth the cost.

“I don’t know,” I said again, but this time the uncertainty held more intention. “Not yet.”

Outside, a car passed slowly, headlights washing over the yellow siding of the house. For a moment, the light made the paint look almost new, almost innocent.

Then the car moved on, and the house returned to shadow—still standing, still holding history, still waiting for what I would do with the truth my grandmother had taped beneath the thing that fed us.
